Geothermal Heat Pumps

While many of the green construction practices have a higher upfront cost compared to traditional building methods, they do offer future homeowners the potential to save money in the long run by reducing utility bills and helping save the environment! One of the green building practices that we are most excited to use in our projects is the geothermal heat pump. Utilizing geothermal energy offers homeowners an opportunity to utilize a highly efficient renewable energy technology.
Geothermal heat pumps are used for both heating and cooling, as well as water heating. The benefit of ground source heat pumps is they concentrate naturally existing heat, rather than by producing heat through the combustion of fossil fuels. Beneath the surface of the earth, it stays at a relatively constant temperature throughout the year, warmer than the air above it during the winter and cooler in the summer. During cold months the heat pumps will pull heat that is stored in the earth or in groundwater into the home, and during the summer it pumps the hot air back into the ground.
Choosing to go green when designing your custom dream home may seem like an extra expense upfront, but there are many programs to help homeowners cover these additional expenses. For geothermal heat pump systems placed in service after 12/31/2019 and before 01/01/2023, homeowners can get a 26% tax credit, and for systems placed in service after 12/31/2022 and before 01/01/2024, they can get a credit of 22%.
